When a coach comes in to the improv group, the coach will observe the practice, and provide exercises, activities, and feedback. The coach does not demonstrate or participate in the improv, but rather is a 3rd-party neutral observer who can provide constructive feedback and criticism.
A Director works with your team to develop a new show format, providing guidance on overall shape of show and structure, not just coaching. Think of a director as a coach + production support for a new idea!
A coach can attend the team's performances to see how the team executes and overall presents their product to an audience. A coach can provide notes and feedback on the performance, as well as attending future rehearsals to help the team grow and improve in whatever areas they are working to develop and improve.
That's okay! Art is highly subjective, and occasionally we may have different opinions or takes on various situations. In those instances it's up to the team to decide if maybe the coach isn't a great fit for their vision, and find a different coach. Or maybe the team and coach can talk through the different perspectives and understand why they aren't agreeing - it may be that the coach is looking at things through a different lens (ex. a family-friendly production) than the team (and adult-oriented show), and the coach can adjust to support the team's overall vision.
